FAQ

About privacy, cost and the files

Is anything I type sent anywhere?

No. These pages have no form and set no cookies of their own. They also tell your browser to block any connection out of the page, so nothing you type can leave it.

To see it for yourself: Open a check, then turn on airplane mode and keep using it. Technical readers can open the browser's Network tab and watch that nothing goes out.

Does it cost anything? Why does StepKnock make it?

StepKnock made it so IT leaders can test their own setup in a few minutes. It costs you nothing, and there is nothing to sign up for. The pages sell nothing.

Who made it?

StepKnock, a small team in San Diego. The open-source picks and workflows are made by other projects and publishers; each page says who.

Can I share a check?

Yes. Send the page's address, or download the PDF and pass it on.

How do I check the PDF fingerprint?

Each Download PDF button shows a SHA-256 fingerprint, the first and last characters of a long code.

On Windows, open PowerShell and type Get-FileHash followed by the file's name. On a Mac, open Terminal and type shasum -a 256 followed by the file's name.

The code it prints should start and end with the same characters the page shows. Windows prints capital letters. The page may show small ones. Ignore the case. If the characters do not match, do not open the file.

Do I need an account?

No. There is no account, no sign-in and no email address to give.

What does the score mean?

For each question, tap Yes (2) if it is written down with a date, Partly (1) if people only remember it, and No (0) if nobody knows. The five add up to a total out of 10, and each check explains what its total means.

A low score is a list of things to find out, not a grade.

Is this advice?

No. The checks and calculators show common patterns and questions to try on your own setup. Use your own judgment, and your own contracts and support agreements, before you act on anything here.

How do I report a problem?

For a security problem, use the address on our Security page. For anything else, use the form on the stepknock.com home page.
