These three systems come back first, and the team agrees on the order
About 20 minutes, with two colleagues
On a day when several systems are down at once, someone has to say which come back first, and that is a hard decision to make for the first time. Five questions show whether your team already has the order, along with what each system needs running before it can start (its dependencies).
- Yes 2
- Written down, with a date (a log, a screen, a document), and it meets your own plan.
- Partly 1
- Remembered, but not written down, or the record shows you missed your plan.
- No 0
- Nobody knows, or it was never done. A blank is a finding.
"None, checked on a date" counts as a record. No plan or target written down? Write your guess first, then measure: the guess is your plan.
Tap No, Partly or Yes for each question. Your score adds up as you go. Nothing you tap is saved or sent.
Five questions about your own setup
1 Which three systems come back first, and in what order?
Your answer, and where it is written down (with the date) The three systems that come back first, in the order they come back.

- Where to find it:
- Your recovery plan, or ask the business owners which outage they would feel first.
- To get it to a 2:
- The order written in the plan, with the date, and the business owners agree with it.
2 What does each one need running before it can start?
Your answer, and where it is written down (with the date) Next to each system, what has to be running before it can start: sign-in, network names, a database, another system.
Score 0, 1 or 2This quarterNext quarterHow to raise it
- Where to find it:
- Ask the person who runs each system, or look at what it connects to. Sign-in, network names and databases are the usual ones.
- To get it to a 2:
- Each system's needs written down, and the order still works with them in it.
3 Do two colleagues, asked separately, name the same order?
Your answer, and where it is written down (with the date) The order two colleagues give you, without seeing yours.
Score 0, 1 or 2This quarterNext quarterHow to raise it
- Where to find it:
- Ask them separately. Different answers are the finding, not a failure.
- To get it to a 2:
- All three orders match, or the differences are settled and the plan is updated, with the date.
4 How long did each one take on its last full restore?
Your answer, and where it is written down (with the date) For each of the three, how long its last full restore took.
Score 0, 1 or 2This quarterNext quarterHow to raise it
- Where to find it:
- Restore logs or test notes. A target from the plan is not a measured time.
- To get it to a 2:
- A measured time from a dated restore for all three.
- What this does not prove:
- One measured restore does not prove all three can come back at the same time.
5 When was the order last walked through with the team?
Your answer, and where it is written down (with the date) The date the order was last walked through with the team, and what changed.
Score 0, 1 or 2This quarterNext quarterHow to raise it
- Where to find it:
- Meeting notes, the plan's change history, or the calendar.
- To get it to a 2:
- A dated walk-through inside the interval your plan sets. No interval written down? Write your guess and score against it.
Your total, out of 10
- 9-10 Known
- Score the same page again next quarter.
- 5-8 Partly known
- Fix your lowest row this week.
- 0-4 Assumed
- Do row 1 this week.
Two rules beat the total: if row 1 scores below 2, the result is Assumed. Any row that missed your plan or guess is your next step.
Would three people on your team name the same first system?
What this does not prove
An agreed order shows your team can name it. It does not show those three systems can come back in the time you wrote down, or at once.
